Paulinho was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. His first contact with music came very early in life when he started singing in a Sunday’s children program at Radio Inconfidencia in his hometown. In his teens he played the drums and then the bass (his main instrument until 1991) before finally switching to the guitar.
In his hometown Paulinho worked for over 10 years at the Studio HP as a jingle composer, arranger, and performer. He led the band “Os Agitadores” in the television program “Brasa 4” and later played the bass for the Célio Balona group (the TV Itacolomi - Radio Guarani house band.)
Paulinho moved to Chicago in 1979 and joined the group Breno Sauer (which later became Made in Brazil.) In 1991, he founded his own band Jazzmineiro whose eponymous 1996 CD received excellent reviews in the Chicago Tribune, Jazziz magazine, the Brazilian Music Review, and The Brazilians.

Paulinho is a world-touring musician and has 22 recordings under his name. Recently, he arranged and performed in “Aquarela", a traditional children's song CD produced by Global Language Project and a soon to be released CD by Polish singer Mietek Scheszniak. Paulinho produced various highly acclaimed concerts in Chicago, most notably “50 years of Bossa Nova” which featured Paulinho’s Octet with special guest Brazilian legend João Donato. The concert was held at Chicago’s Millennium Park on July 24, 2008 and was seen by a record audience of 12,000 people. In December of that same year, he shared the famous Esplanade Hall stage in Singapore with Jeremy Monteiro and Toots Thielemans for a sold out audience of 2,600 people. Paulinho performs regularly in prestigious jazz festivals and clubs around Asia, Europe and America, such as:

Paulinho also performs often at The Jazz Cruise and Jazz Party At Sea.
As clinician - educator, Paulinho has given workshops and concerts in prestigious universities such as:

In 2009 and 2010, he taught in Russia at the Moscow College of Improvised Music and gave workshops live on TV for the Russian audience.
Paulinho presently teaches coaches a Brazilian combo at Roosevelt University.
At the end of October 2016, Paulinho relocated to Los Angeles, a city he dreamed of living in since growing up in Brazil. In his new home he hopes to become the house hold name he was in Chicago
